Cub Scouts can earn the National Summertime Pack Award

Boy Scout Troops can earn the National Camping Award

The National Summertime Pack Award

Cub Scouting is best when it operates as a year-round program....and that includes the summer months of June, July & August.  During the summer months Cub Scouts and their families can participate in many Scouting activities that are educational and fun! A full summer program keeps a pack healthy, parents interested, and Cub Scouts eager to register for another year.

Participating in these Summertime activities also gives the Cub Scout, his Den, and your entire Pack an opportunity to earn the National Summertime Pack Award.  This is also an important component of the Quality Unit Program for your Pack.  This web page  describe this program in detail and explain ways to help you plan your Pack summer activities and qualify for the award.

The Requirements for the National Summertime Pack Award

All the pack has to do is plan and conduct a monthly pack activity for June, July, and August. The whole idea is to keep your pack together and doing things during the summer when boys have the most free time.  Ways to achieve this include:

  • Attending Cub - Parent Weekends at Schiff Scout Reservation as a pack in July or August

  • Attending Wauwepex Webelos Camp as a Den.

Contact your District Executive if you need an application for the award.   You can also download the National Summertime Pack Award application .

There is a great resource on the web for earning the National Summertime Pack Award from the Cyber Cubber website (not affiliated with the BSA).  To get additional ideas for earning this award and keeping your Pack running in the summer, CLICK HERE .

Cub Scout Outdoor Activity Award

Tiger Cubs, Wolf and Bear Cub Scouts, and Webelos Scouts have the opportunity to earn the Cub Scout Outdoor Activity Award. Boys may earn the award in each of the program years as long as the requirements are completed each year. The first time the award is earned, the boy will receive the pocket flap award, which is to be worn on the right pocket flap of the uniform shirt. Each successive time the award is earned, a wolf track pin may be added to the flap. Leaders should encourage boys to build on skills and experiences from previous years when working on the award for a successive year.

The National Camping Award

The National Camping Award is designed to recognize troop who go camping during the year. Your troop may qualify in two categories as you begin to expand your camping program: yearly and cumulative.

The Requirements for the National Camping Award

Record keeping procedures: At least 50% of your troop must attend summer camp, either at Onteora or another long term camp. On the other campouts, at least 33% of your Scouts must be in attendance for each twenty-four-hour period to count as a camper day to qualify for the troop ribbons. A record is kept by your troop of the number of days camped each year. Your Unit Commissioner or District Camping Chairperson may approve the application for recognition.

Individual Scouts and Scouters may qualify for the cumulative patch by participating in camp-out with their families, patrols, or other groups. Your twelve-month period may cover a calendar year, a charter year, or any other twelve-month period predetermined by your patrol leaders’ council.
