Theodore Roosevelt Council is going to purchase the accident sickness and accident policy for all
registered units in our council. This coverage has been optional; however, the Council Risk Management Committee has advised the Council Executive Board that reduction of liability for units and reduction of costs can be achieved if all Cub packs, Boy Scout troops, and Venturing crews purchase this coverage. Starting January 2009, all units in our council will be required to purchase this coverage, for a cost of $ 1 per registered member in addition to the current registration fee.

Family FOS Presentations

Pledge to help keep Scouting’s values burning brightly…
We hope that every Pack and Troop will sign up for a 10 minute Family Friends of Scouting presentation. An ideal time is during a troop’s first Court of Honor in 2008 or at a Pack’s Blue and Gold Banquet. These events are ideal for reaching the most families. Please let us know when you would like your presentation held, so that we may get you on the calendar early.

The presentations, by district volunteers, will briefly explain the many services, supplies, activities, and camping opportunities that are available to ensure our Scouts have a quality program, and give parents, relatives, and friends of Scouts in your unit the opportunity to make a financial contribution to support and continue the best Scouting programs possible in Nassau County.

If you have any questions or would like to schedule a presentation, please contact Donal McCarthy at 627-7136 or at finbarrhimself@yahoo.com .

On Sunday October 12th 2008, Pack 544 (Webelos-1) did their "good turn" by participating in The Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network’s (FAAN) Walk for Food Allergy: Moving Toward A Cure.   The Webelos supported the organization by handing out water to the walk participants.  When all of the water had been handed out the Webelos continued to encourage the participants by cheering them on, and encouraging them to complete the 3 mile walk.

The event was designed to raise funds to find a cure and to educate others about the impact of food allergies.   Through the charity of others thousands of dollars were raised to support FAAN and their efforts.

Webelos to Scout Transition

Attention Cubmasters, Webelos Den Leaders, and Scoutmasters:

Webelos transition is not automatic. You need to be proactive on both the pack and the troop side. The Webelos leader should be preparing the Scouts by continually promoting Boy Scouting. Scouting should be viewed as an ongoing adventure, and the progression should be as normal as moving from elementary to middle school.

Also, Boy Scout troops should assign an Assistant Scoutmaster or a Troop Committee member to be responsible for new Scouts which would include developing a relationship with the units in the area. This person serves as a resource for the Webelos overnight activities and builds enthusiasm among the boys.

You are now asking: how do I find out who are the Scoutmasters or Cubmasters for the units near my unit? Well, this is where we can help direct you and your Scouts. We have a list of these leaders in your area. All unit info stays within this district and is not
shared with anyone.

Please call Shelter Rock’s Webelos to Scout Transition Chairman, Bill Birkdale at 516-873-1413 or birkdale@yahoo.com with your questions and inquiries. Bill will help direct you and answer your questions. This will be your biggest tool in the transition process.
