Travel from New York by Automobile

approximate travel distance: 310 mile

approximate travel time: 7 hours

  • Take the Cross Island Parkway north to the  Throgs Neck Bridge;

    Pay toll and follow signs to the Cross Bronx Expressway (CBE) westbound.

  • Go westbound on the CBE to the George Washington Bridge; cross the bridge and follow signs to I-95 south (NJ Turnpike).

  • Follow the NJ Turnpike to I-295 south; stay on I-295 on Delaware Memorial Bridge; follow signs to I-95.

  • Stay on I-95 to Washington DC metro area.

  • I-95 will split to I-395 and I-495.  Exit to I-495 and follow the Beltway to Virginia. 

  • I -495 will merge back to I-95.  Merge onto I-95 south.

  • Take I-95 south to exit 126 (FREDERICKSBURG/MASSAPONAX AREA)

  • Turn right off of Exit 126 onto Route 1.

  • Go approximately 1 mile - at third stoplight turn left onto Route 17 (you should see the sign for Fort A.P. Hill just before the third light).

  • Go approximately 6 miles until you come to the intersection of Routes 17 and 2 (there will be a stop light).

  • Turn right onto Route 2 South and go about 14 miles until you come to the stoplight in Bowling Green (intersection of Routes 2 and 301).

  • Turn left at the light and proceed to U.S. 301. Turn left (north) onto U.S. 301 at the second stop sign...you will soon see two small motels and a restaurant on your right...the Fort A.P. Hill main entrance is just a bit further on your left.

Ft. A. P. Hill, the site of the National Boy Scout Jamboree, is located in Caroline County VA. 

The county is located in the Central Virginia region roughly midway between Richmond and Washington, D.C. It is bordered on the north by the Rappahannock River, on the south by the Mattaponi River, and on the southwest by the North Anna River.

The National Park Service operates several Civil War battlefields in this area, including the Stonewall Jackson Shrine.  Just outside the county line along I-95 is Kings Dominion, a major theme park of of mid-Atlantic region that also features WaterWorks, its own waterpark.
