Protestant Committee on Scouting

The Protestant Committee on Scouting provides churches the opportunity to carry out a ministry with children, youth and families using the programs and activities of Scouting.

We encourage and support all youth to earn the Religious Emblem of their protestant denomination by offering several events through the year: The Protestant Cub Scout Faith and Fun Day (for Tiger, Wolf, Bear & Webelo) on the last Saturday in October; The Ten Commandment Hike on the Friday after Thanksgiving; The Protestant Scout Religious Recognition Awards Communion Service and Breakfast to recognize all scouts and adults who earned their Religious Emblem during the past year. We invite past recipients and those who have yet to earn their religious emblems as well. This event is held on the first Saturday of March; The All Faith Retreat (for all Boy Scouts). This event enables all the Faith Committees (ex:Protestant, Jewish, Catholic, Eastern Orthodox) to participate in Interfaith Activities as well as individual programs for all scouts to start working on, or to continue working on earning their religious emblems.

The Committee accomplishes its goals by:
  • Encouraging Protestant Churches to recognize and make Scouting an integral part of its church and community's program.
  • Administering and promoting the religious emblem program for youth and adults.
  • Providing Chaplain services for Protestant boys at Scout camps and camporees.
  • Informing ministers and lay leaders of the relationship of church-related Scouting units to the church's total administration and programs.
  • Serving as a clearinghouse for all matters pertaining to the relationship of Scouting to the Protestant churches of the local council.
  • Promoting training of volunteers in carrying out religious functions that belong to the church.

All are welcome to our committee meetings. We meet on the second Thursday of the  month, 7:00pm, Boy Scout Council Office, 554 Broadway, Massapequa.

Chairman: Jim Hayden (516) 826-5573, [Click for member's page].
