Camp Commissioner Service

Welcome....

This is the Commissioner's  program page; CPA Online will tell you a little more about the Commissioner Service.

Our Goal....

For the Onteora staff, the only goal is that each and every scout that emerges through the gate has the experience of a lifetime. The staff knows that it has done a good job when scouts leave on Saturday with pride, accomplishment, and the excitement of returning to summer camp the following year. The Commissioner Staff works individually with each troop to ensure that these expectations are met. Though the commissioners are on call 24/7, your daily campsite visitation is your Troop's best opportunity to find out what special activities are going on for that day, order any food for in campsite cooking, and anything else necessary for making your stay enjoyable.

Beyond Advancement....

Want to learn more about the Legends Program? Different areas in camp have something special going on at 7:00pm every day.  Each level of the LEGENDS program has age and experience appropriate activities at the different program areas in camp. Everyone in camp gets a card from their Commissioner on Sunday Night.  Click here for more information.

Helpful hints on your daily campsite inspection....

Like any other summer camp, the cleanliness of your site is an important part of our goal to provide a safe and healthy environment for the Scouts, and for this we ask the help of the Troops. While your campsite will be pristine upon entering camp on Sunday, the tolls of late night cracker barrels, campfires, and gadget building will no doubt create somewhat of a mess. Where Onteora differs from other camps is our philosophy. We continue to believe that the traditional "inspection" of a campsite causes more worry and dispute then it does Scout Spirit. Therefore we will continue to emphasize the major components of a "clean campsite" as the means of our inspections.

Onteora provides a checklist of items that includes proper storage of gear, clean latrines, and safe walkways throughout the campsite. Our philosophy has always been that summer camp is the ultimate way of facilitating Troop Program. Things such as tent flaps and duty rosters are your own business. We are not here to tell you what you can and cannot post on a bulletin board. We are here to make sure you have fun. That being said, we will be stringent on the handful of items that do appear on the inspection sheet that your troop will be given Sunday night during the first scoutmaster's meeting.

Each troop who receives a "First Class Campsite" for the day will receive a card. Troops who receive five cards for the week will be presented an Honor Troop Certificate on Saturday morning. Overall, we feel that the commissioners are here to help, and we would be contradicting that by entering your campsite each morning with the "white glove" mentality of taking points off for trivial items.

Troop Spirit....

Onteora offers the highly coveted Spirit Stick, which is presented each day during evening colors to the troop who has displayed the most scout spirit. The honored troop keeps the stick until the next evening's presentation, and may embellish the stick with their troop number, scout's names, or other creative ways of marking the accomplishment. A troop may win the stick only once during the Monday through Friday period. However, troops are encouraged to keep their spirit high for their entire stay as on Saturday morning, the troop who has shown the most spirit for the week is given the stick to take home for their troop!
