GOWANUS

An Algonquin tribe who lived in the area now known as Brooklyn.  Newsday attributes the name to  the Indian who planted there, Gauwane's plantation. His name may be translated "the sleeper," or "he rests." It is cognate with the Delaware gauwin, "to sleep;" Massachusetts, kouwen, "he sleeps," koueuenin, "a sleeper
