TRC: Scouting Operations Update

Dear Scouting Families,

As always, thank you for volunteering as a leader in the Boy Scouts of America. Even though these past three months have been challenging, we have seen it bring out the absolute best in our youth. We are proud of how our Scouts lead the way with their local volunteer service. We remain hopeful that Nassau County and the BSA will continue its slow road back to normalcy.

Currently, we would like to update you on Theodore Roosevelt Council Scouting operations:

Council Program Center

  •  Phase II (as part of New York State’s four-phase re-opening plan) began this week, and our Council professional staff, working remotely since March, returned to working out of our Council Program Center in Massapequa. Please note that, until Phase III is announced, no volunteers or other visitors are allowed in the Program Center.

  •  In Phase III, which we hope may be announced as early as next week, our front desk will be open for individual transactions, including registrations, membership dues, donations, Eagle applications, and other Scouting business. Visitors will not be admitted into the lobby without a face covering.

  • Our staff will continue to conduct meetings via Zoom and phone to support our volunteers—please do not hesitate to call if you need assistance.

Scout Shop

  • In Phase III, the Scout Shop is expected to open under a modified schedule. Further information and specific hours of operation are forthcoming.

Unit Meetings and Outings

  •  At this point we are pleased to announce that as of July 1st the Council will allow gatherings of up to 10 people. Before any unit meetings take place, you should get approval of your sponsoring institution. Please click the link to download the Restart Scouting Checklist to help you plan safe gatherings. Please remember to always follow local government guidelines on social distancing, face coverings, etc. This guidance is subject to change as we receive NYS Government updates.

Council Camps and Larger Gatherings

  • As you probably know, Scouting has been defined within the group of Phase IV operations. Therefore, we are not able to offer larger gatherings or any group activities at our properties until New York State indicates that we are in Phase IV.

  • Onteora and Schiff Camps will remain closed until the state and local governments allow regular Camp Operations. As you know, all overnight resident camping in New York State has been canceled for the summer by the State Department of Health.

  • As an alternative, we are offering Onteora Online, a virtual camp for units and individual Scout BSA members to hang with their friends and earn up to five merit badges while having fun in a safe online environment. Sign-up can be found at https://www.onteora.org/signupExternal Link

We want to assure you that we are keeping a close eye on announcements made by New York State and how that impacts our ability, at the Council, District and Unit levels, to provide program for our Scouts. We will provide updated guidance as soon as additional information becomes available, and certainly no later than the end of July.

Our Council staff and Volunteer leadership is always here to help you with any questions or concerns. Feel free to contact the Council Service Center and your District Executive 1-516-797-7600.

Have a wonderful Summer and thank you again for all you continue to do for Scouting, our youth, and our community!

Yours in Scouting,

Andy Johns       Chris Coscia          Pete Shields
