Key Dates for Applicants

February 1 - April 30

 

Applicant Meets with Scoutmaster to Review Request to attend Bear Claw.  The Scoutmaster must sign the application and fill out an evaluation of the applicant. Parents must sign the application.  INCOMPLETE APPLICATIONS WILL BE RETURNED.

The $ 100 deposit is due April 1

February 1 - April 30

Registration period for both courses. 

A completed application is submitted to the Council Service Center with a $ 100 deposit; the deposit is due April 1

  • During the registration period, only one guaranteed space per troop per course is available. 

  • Multiple applicants from a troop can be placed on a wait-list and will be consider after May 1 .

May 1 - June 1

Applications are reviewed by the course staff to set up patrols; wait -listed applicants are placed on a course if space is available.  No more than 3 members of the same troop can be on the same course unless an exception is made by the Course Director. Please email bearclaw@trcbsa.org should your unit seek an exception.

Participant Briefing  - This is a mandatory briefing.

The Scoutmaster and one parent should attend. Course behavior and procedures will be reviewed.  The Scout will dress in a full summer Class A uniform. Download the Participant Orientation Briefing materials.  All medical and permission forms are due at this meeting.

June 1

All applicants must complete Troop Leadership Training (TLT) by this date. District courses based on the former JLT weekend course are not equivalent to TLT; TLT is a troop based activity led by the SM and SPL.

Balance of course fee due at Council Service Center. No fees will be accepted at the pre-course briefing. 

July 4 -6 and July 11-13

Post Course

Earning the Bear Claw Necklace 

  • Scouts completing the Bear Claw NYLT course will develop a personal vision statement that will be forwarded to their Scoutmaster. 

  • Scouts have one year from the completion of the course to finish the goals outlined in the vision statement and review it with their Scoutmaster but may not submit the final report for at least 6 months from completion of the course

  • The Scoutmaster will submit an evaluation to the Course Director after meeting with the Scout.  The Scout will earn a Bear Claw necklace and Bear Claw Course certificate which should be presented at a troop Court of Honor.
