Hickox Hall Fire Schiff Scout Reservation Frequently Asked Questions
1. When did the fire start? The fire was discovered at about 3:45 PM on Tuesday, November 1. It was finally brought under control at about 8 PM. Nine different fire departments responded and we are grateful to each responder.
2. What caused the fire? The investigation is still ongoing and additional investigators from various agencies still need to visit the site. We cannot begin any cleanup or demolition until all agencies have completed their investigations. As such, it would just be conjecture to make any guesses at this time. As soon as the official findings are released, we will release them to our volunteers.
3. How bad was the damage? The building and all of its contents were totally destroyed.
4. Was there insurance? Yes. The volunteers of the Council’s Risk Management Committee did an outstanding job of making sure we were adequately insured, including business interruption, and code upgrade coverage. An important item to be aware of is that the insurance will cover the rebuilding without drawing much needed funds from the operating budget, which would hinder the program. We anticipate a $200,000 initial payment shortly to pay for security of the site, cleanup and the development of the plan.
5. When will camp be open again? The dining hall site has been fenced in, and sites along the main road have been reopened.
6. Are there plans to rebuild and when do you expect the new hall to be ready? We plan to rebuild the dinning hall into a modern facility. The insurance will pay for us to build a building comparable to the one we had. Any additions or upgrades, outside of those required by new codes, must be done with non-insurance funds. Depending on how difficult the approval process is, we anticipate it could take up to two years to have the building ready for use.
7. What is the Executive Board doing? Members of the Key Officers have been in constant contact since the fire occurred. A building steering committee has been established to guide the rebuilding process. They have been in touch with the Engineering Department of the National Office and have secured their assistance. |
